How to Lose Clients

Let me tell you a story from my last job…

To avoid using names, let's call the agency I worked for “Producify” and the client “Ice.”

Ice was an up-and-coming brand looking to establish itself as the “Apple of (their industry)”

In other words, they wanted to appear premium and high-quality.

But when Ice hired Producify, we were Ice’s “hail Mary” to save their brand from bankruptcy. Things weren't looking good for them… at all.

So they took a major risk: they gave us endless sums of money to use towards our services for them in hopes that simply brute-forcing their marketing would save them.

It worked…

For a while.

The entire company was panicked and just praying that their gamble would pay off, and they were happy to meet with us on a frequent basis to understand what was going on and to help however they could.

Ice was an OUTSTANDING client! ❤️

But when the SMMA landscape shifted towards TikTok Shop, the fears and dreams of our clients fell by the wayside and Producify’s executives stopped holding Ice’s metaphorical hand.

Except me.

My role was to manage all the creators and act as their liaison to the clients. That meant that when nobody else would talk to the client, I would have to.

Apparently I (and a wonderful handful of Producify's fantastic employees!!!) did a sufficient job of making Ice feel heard, quelling their fears, and outlining exactly what was happening with their marketing and why. Because they stuck around despite their endless panic.

I later found out that, right after I left Producify to start my own company, Ice terminated their contract with Producify.

Ice’s marketing department (and in fact, the entire company) was completely overwhelmed and overworked!

All they needed was some help, guidance, encouragement, and explanation.

Apparently that was too much to ask 🙄

This story is why PROFESSIONAL, DEVOTED RELATIONSHIPS with my clients is a central and driving philosophy behind my company.

It's just not that hard 🤦‍♂️
